Meningocele
Causes
The definite etiology of meningocele remains poorly understood. Most isolated neural tube defects appear to be caused by folate deficiency, likely combined with genetic and environmental risk factors.
There are three main types:
spina bifida occulta, meningocele and myelomeningocele. Meningocele and myelomeningocele may be grouped as spina bifida cystica. The most common location is the lower back, but in rare cases it may be in the middle back or neck.
Treatment
Treating the meningocele involves closing the overlying meninges and the skin. Surgery is performed within a day or two of birth, and is necessary to prevent infection and to protect the exposed area of the spine.
